At the end of Havenstraat on the slope of the Botterwerf in the Old Harbor, the botter Lobke is patiently waiting for a makeover. There seems to be quite a bit of work to be done on the ship. Fishing and the botters were once the economic engine of Huizen. Around 1880, a thousand of the 3,500 inhabitants that Huizen had at that time worked in fishing. More than 400 as crew on one of the over 180 botters that were then in the harbor. After the closure of the Zuiderzee, things went downhill. The trading spirit remained, cheese took the place (the family business Westland Cheese from Old Amsterdam and Maaslander has been in Huizen for over 85 years) of fish, and shipbuilding became house construction. The Huizer Botters foundation keeps four original botters - the oldest from 1892 - in operation as sailing historical heritage.
