Greenhouse horticulture around Bovenkarspel forms a striking contrast with the natural surroundings you walk through. You can get a good view of it from the edge of the Streekbos. A lot has changed here over the years, as before the major land consolidation in 1978, the forest was also agricultural land. Here’s a little history of greenhouse horticulture. At the end of the 19th century, local market gardeners still travelled by wooden barges through the narrow ditches of West Friesland to the historic Vaarveiling auction to deliver vegetables and flower bulbs. The barges moored behind the station, where the harvest was loaded onto trains. This practice declined around 1970 with the use of trucks. Today, millions of greenhouse-grown tulips are exported from here around the world.
