Over the years, around a hundred Bronze Age farmsteads have been excavated in West Friesland. To give visitors an idea of what they looked like, a replica of a combined house and byre was built in the Streekbos in the late 1980s. After being vandalised and damaged by fire, the farmstead was moved to the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen. Although the replica no longer stands here, stepping stones and tree trunks offer a glimpse into how prehistoric inhabitants lived. The replica was built using traditional materials such as wood, clay, straw and reed, and had a living area and a byre for livestock.
