The Liesbos is located south of Prinsenbeek in the municipality of Breda, between the Roosendaal-Breda railway line and the A58 and opposite the hamlet of Lies.
The forest is over 200 hectares in size and consists mainly of deciduous trees. It is the largest old pedunculate oak forest in the Netherlands. Coniferous trees have also been planted on the higher dry parts. The forest has been managed by the Forestry Commission since 1899. The name Liesbos comes from the hamlet of Lies, which is located here. In 1200, the area was described as the estate of Hage and Lies. A heron colony has been established there since the Middle Ages.
