Jan van Hout improved the world hour record of the Swiss Oscar Egg by 341 meters on the wooden cycling track of Roermond in 1933. He covered 44.588 kilometers. During World War II, van Hout was active in the resistance. In the summer of 1944, he was captured by the Germans. After passing through the camps of Vught and Amersfoort, he ended up in Neuengamme, where he died in February 1945.
The monument (unveiled on May 15, 2006, by Bernard Hinault) stands (in the spa park) on the Cauberg in Valkenburg.
