On November 1, 1570, the Dutch and Flemish coasts were ravaged by a huge flood known as the All Saints Flood. Numerous cities were affected such as Egmond, Bergen op Zoom and Saeftinghe. But some villages were even completely flooded and are called the drowned villages (Avenkerke on the island of Wulpen, Cornsant on the island of Bosch in the Wadden Sea, Klaaskinderkerke on Schouwen-Duiveland, Koezand in the mouth of the Westerschelde, Moggershil west of Tholen, Westende on the island of Wulpen).
