After the occupation of Amsterdam by the Spanish landlord Alva in 1567, the city was besieged by the rebels. During this occupation, the population of Amsterdam suffered greatly. Just outside the city walls, hungry women offered their bodies to friend and foe in exchange for money and food. To this day, this area of Amsterdam is known as "the walletjes."
