Hiking trail Bernisse_Zuidland

Pleasant walking route that starts in the center of Zuidland near the Ring. The Ring is a typical sight in Zuidland.

Then you walk along the Spui and the Bernisse. Along the way you will also visit the Bernisse inlet lock.

Zuidland (municipality of Bernisse) is a port village on the Bernisse, created after the diking of the Polder Zuidland (1416). A dammed creek was enlarged into a rectangular harbour basin with buildings on the surrounding dike (Ring).

The village expanded inwards with the Dorpsstraat and the Kerkstraat and in between the church; this part of Zuidland has a church ring-like character. After the landing of the Bernisse in the 16th century, the port was dammed.

A town hall annex school was built on the dam in 1878, after which the port was turned into a village pond. On the southeast side along the Kerkweg, several large farms were built in the 19th century.

After the Flood disaster of 1953, the area between dike and Kerkweg was built on.
