Thanks to the efforts of vereniging Natuurmonumenten, De Wieden has grown from its first purchase in 1934 into a robust nature reserve of more than six thousand ha. Together with the adjacent nature reserve De Weerribben (Staatsbosbeheer), De Wieden forms the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Based on the cycle route network, a cycling tour has been put together along striking points in nature reserve De Wieden. The cycle route starts at the visitor centre.
