The Fat Gold - Contraband Where there is a border, there can be smuggling. One of the most notable products that crossed the border as contraband was butter; the fat gold. In 1955 a kilo of butter cost 3 guilders in the Netherlands, twice as much in Belgium. In 1951, probably one million kilos of butter were smuggled to Belgium every month; one-third of the total consumption there. A ruthless fight ensued between customs and the smugglers for a few kilos of butter, complete with armoured cars, crow's feet, weapons and wild chases.
