Description by the author

Take a trip with the camper along waterworks and waterways in Waterland of Friesland. Discover how the people here sometimes work together with the water and another time fight with it. It is best to cut the motorhome route into four days so that you have enough time to park the camper and enjoy the water icons along the way. Find beautiful camper spots along the route here.

You start at UNESCO World Heritage the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal. Since 1920, the pumping station has been switched on at high water levels to ensure dry feet in Friesland. Continue along the largest lake in Friesland: the Tsjûkemar. There are many stories about its origin. Is it human work? Or does it originate from the folk legend about the sisters Tsjûke and Marchje. Continue driving your camper to the Snitser Mar. Enjoy the views and read the story about the skûtsjesilen. A Frisian tradition where people compete with each other in the so-called sailing trucks of the past. Discover in IJlst on the banks of river De Geeuw Houtzaagmolen De Rat. Here, planks have been sawn from thick wood on wind energy for 200 years. Sniff the wood scent in IJlst and step back in time. The historic mill still works! Learn more about Houtstad IJlst in the nearby museum.

After IJlst, dive under the water with your camper at Woudsend. Thanks to this aqueduct and many other aqueducts and bridges, you can now get anywhere by land. Then drive along the Sleattemer Mar to the cliffs in Gaasterland. These are the only three cliffs in the Netherlands! With the camper you can visit all three of them. Travel further along the former Zuiderzee to the Bight of Molkwar, a nature reserve of it Fryske Gea. A true paradise for birds and birdwatchers. At Tjerkwerd, it's time to take action. Get the bikes from the camper or take the leg cart along the towpath at Tjerkwerd. This is a narrow road along the water, also called a towpath or towpath. Here ships could be pulled forward from land and this was called hunting. There is no need to be hunted, here you can relax. Continue to the mound village of Allingawier. Many villages in the area are built on an elevation, called a mound. The village of Allingawier was once called one of the ten most beautiful places in the Netherlands. After this visit you can take a nice walk on the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband, a more than 1000 year old ring dike that protected the village of Pingjum from the water. A golden opportunity for a unique moment. Close the camper route at the Afsluitdijk in the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center. Take a look inside this striking building with interesting exhibits.

This motorhome route tells the story of Stromen in Waterland, in which you take a journey along the water icons of Southwest Friesland.
