Barony Town and Country Cycle Route | Food

The Barony offers the best of both worlds: urban ambiance and expansive nature. An area where horticulture and (food) industry were decisive for the development of the city and the countryside. Thanks in part to the sugar factories, Oosterhout grew from a fairly poor provincial town into a lively centre with large manufacturers such as Jamin (candy and ice cream) and Schriek (gingerbread).

Breda, already in the Middle Ages a city full of vegetable gardens and orchards, grew into an important centre for horticulture, from where strawberries were transported to London. The fruit processing industry, such as Jamfabriek Princenhage and Hero, where fruit was processed into jam and soft drinks, also found their place in Breda. During a visit to the centre of the Brabant sugar industry, the traces of the past are still visible and you will be introduced to sweet specialties and other characteristic products from the Barony.
