The Loonse and Drunense Dunes form a unique nature reserve located in the south of the Netherlands. It is an extensive landscape of sand dunes, forests, and heathlands that attracts many visitors each year.
This beautiful nature reserve covers an area of approximately 3,500 hectares and is known for its impressive sand drift formations. The dunes were formed by the combination of wind and human activity and now constitute one of the largest drifting sand areas in Western Europe.
Once, Boompjesven/Hengstven was a wet area with ponds and swamps. In the 1930s, it was drained for agriculture. In the meantime, Nature Monuments, in collaboration with the Dune Farmers, has restored the original agricultural landscape: old ponds are once again visible and accessible, and the heathlands have been given the chance to grow again. The pond is an important link between the dry sandy landscape of the Loonse and Drunense Dunes and the wet marsh area De Brand. This allows animals and plants to have a larger habitat, and the flora and fauna have become more diverse. Traditionally, many partridges and hares used to be found here. Nowadays, you can also encounter deer and badgers.
Nature Gate De Drie Linden in Drunen is located near National Park De Loonse and Drunense Dunes. The rolling drifting sand plains, heathlands, and extensive forests, with meadows and marshes on the southern side, promise an unforgettable adventure. Discover this nature reserve on foot, by bike, or on horseback. For a snack or drink, you can visit Herberg de Drie Linden, which also features an indoor playground.
Giersbergen is a hamlet south of Drunen in the municipality of Heusden in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It has 28 inhabitants and lies on the north side of National Park De Loonse and Drunense Dunes.
In one of the most beautiful places in Brabant lies De Rustende Jager, right on the edge of National Park De Loonse and Drunense Dunes. For 100 years, this has been the perfect rest stop to recuperate from walking, horse riding, or cycling through the dunes.
At the edge of the forest with a view over the meadows, it is wonderful to daydream while enjoying, for example, a cappuccino paired with a delicious Brabantse Broeder.
