Giethoorn is one of the 6 most beautiful canal cities in the world according to BBC Travel. This small town outside Amsterdam developed into swamps. The solution of the 12th century peat farmers was to dig canals to transport their goods. And you bridge them on this walk along the more than 150 wooden footbridges.
Another tough fact to tell on your walk: the first settlers found a lot of goat horns in this wetland and named their hometown 'Geytenhoren'. The wild goats are said to have perished en masse due to the St. Elizabeth's Flood (1170).
You can park your car on the square in front of the cemetery.
