Your route starts at De Hoofdwacht, a historic spot in the historical core of Brielle (also known as Den Briel). The largely seventeenth-century fortress of Brielle is one of the best-preserved defenses in the Netherlands. Brielle was captured by the Geuzen on April 1, 1572, from the Spaniards. After which the phrase 'On April 1, Alva lost his glasses' became cultural heritage. The Historical Museum Den Briel is a must-visit to kick off your trip. Here, you can learn more about the history of the fortress town. In the atmospheric streets, it seems that history has stood still. From the water, you have a beautiful view of the fortress belt of the renowned town of Brielle. You will also pass by the Vliegend Hert, a grain mill from 1862.
