The seemingly urban Heerlen is interspersed with green areas full of traces from the medieval and mining periods. Between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was rural here with farms, mills, churches, and castles spread throughout the landscape. One ruler succeeded another. When the 'mine barons' arrived, everything changed drastically, but old farms and castles often took on a new purpose instead of continuing to decline. Worker neighborhoods arose and new heritage was created.
