This ancient ‘Monks’ forest is located in the catchment area of the Vlootbeek and offers a great diversity of flora and fauna. The Munnichsbos is particularly known for the large number of woodpecker species and some remarkable owl species. Adjacent to the forest is Aerwinkel Castle, built in 1854 by the Roermond master builder Dr. Pierre Cuypers. The neo-Gothic castle is surrounded by a beautifully designed English landscape garden.
