The Customs Officers (douane) outsmarted
It was no coincidence that many cafes, shops, and farms were located near or along the border. These were the perfect places to pass on smuggled goods. The bike ride starts and ends at such an ideal spot at the border: De Witte Stein.
Just after WWII, food items like flour, coffee, and butter were frequently smuggled goods. Women and girls hid these in their clothing. It was absolutely necessary not to get caught because if you were caught, the customs officers would put you by the stove and the butter would melt, and you’d be caught red-handed.
Bike ride 48 km. Between Germany and the Netherlands. Starting location Witte Stein - Reuver. It was often a game for the smugglers to outsmart the customs officers. Download for free!
