Description by the author

This gravel route is a 10 km longer variant (with 5% more gravel) of route Graveling on both sides of the Meuse (and the border) in Midden-Limburg and Germany, and starts from the parking lot at the St. Elisabethmolen in Leudal (where you can eat and drink afterwards). 55% of the route is on almost only gravel roads.

You first cycle along a bike path next to the main road to Haelen, to get your first gravel road under the wheels after 2 km. The passage through the Haelen creek valley also goes via gravel roads (some of which are several hundred meters more sandy than gravel and therefore can be a bit more challenging to bike after dry spells). You cross the N279, and then a second, prettier passage through the Haelen Creek Valley (via gravel roads) follows. Then you cycle briefly along a bike path next to the busy N280, to switch back to gravel road in the Exatenbosch. You then cycle towards Beegden, and in Beegden itself, there’s a short piece of gravel road. After that, there are five kilometers of asphalt roads to cross the Meuse and the Lateral Canal.

After crossing the Meuse via the Dams of Linne, gravel roads follow in the floodplains of the Meuse, and you cycle past Castle Heysterum. You also cycle twice over the high southern bank of the Meuse (the first time in the village of Linne, the second time over gravel road just outside Linne). You cross the A73, and then you get gravel roads over slightly hilly terrain until you reach the Roerdal. Now there’s again an asphalt section of five kilometers to cross the Roer and to traverse the southern (rather rural) edge of Roermond, unfortunately, in the very last kilometer, you have to cross an industrial area.

But then it becomes a gravel feast as you first bike over gravel bike paths through the Luzenkamp nature reserve, later transitioning to paved bike paths. In Germany, you quickly switch over to the gravel roads in the Elmpter Wald and Lüesekamp nature reserve, where you encounter a number of short climbs (two of which even reach 15%). You briefly cross the A52 via a paved road, and then descend again over gravel roads, climb (via a nice dry valley), and descend over the steep edge that is right against the border here. The gravel roads here are sometimes a bit stonier in character.

You then mostly go over gravel roads through the Elmpter Schwalmbruch, a partly heath area along the river Schwalm, and you also bike a bit alongside the Schwalm (watch out for walkers, the route here partly goes over broad gravel roads that are also included in one of the WWW walking routes (Water - Walk - World)). You then bike through the Diergardtscher Wald (note: access may be blocked by a barrier, you can bike around it here), where you also encounter a few climbs. You leave the Diergardtscher Wald and bike 700 meters along the bike path next to the main road Brüggen - Swalmen. At Herberg De Bos (after 52 km of cycling), you switch to gravel roads through the Municipal Forests of Swalmen.

You then cross the A73 again, and gravel roads follow through the Beesels Broek nature reserve, past Castle Nieuwenbroeck (Beesel) and through the floodplains of the Meuse. You cross the Meuse via the ferry Beesel - Kessel, before cycling towards the Heldense Bossen. Here you get a long stretch of gravel bike paths beneath your wheels. The route then goes over wide gravel roads through the agricultural area just north of Neer. The route ends with two and a half kilometers of asphalt roads.
