Leenderbos and Tongelreep

It is a beautiful - though somewhat adventurous due to the water accumulation - nature hike. Rubber boots or good waterproof footwear are definitely not an unnecessary luxury.

The route leads through the beautiful nature reserve Leenderbos. Until 1930, an extensive area with heath and sand drifts lay in the forestry management of Leenderbos. The heath had become unprofitable for agriculture, and the area was neglected. Staatsbosbeheer bought it and planted forests as part of the employment promotion program. Leenderbos was a typical production forest, as were established elsewhere in the Netherlands at the time.

And also through the valley of the Tongelreep. The Tongelreep is a tributary of the Dommel, which springs in Belgium at the Kempen Plateau near Erpekom, a village in Peer. During its 25 km course in Belgian territory, the river is called Warmbeek.
