To the south of Maastricht, between the Jeker and Maas, rises the Sint-Pietersberg. The extraction of marl created a maze of underground passages and took a hefty bite out of the mountain. Thousands of bats hibernate in the passages. In 1926, the Province of Limburg granted a concession to the Eerste Nederlandse Cement Industrie (ENCI) for the exploitation of a quarry. The limestone extracted here is the main raw material for cement. The quarry is approximately 135 hectares large. Many geologists can find joy here. You can find fossils from the Cretaceous period, which was 65 million years ago.
