Liberation monuments between Roosendaal and Achtmaal

Bike route: Roosendaal – Oude Buisse Heide – Achtmaal – Horendonk – Essen – Nispen – Roosendaal

A bike route full of nature, quiet spots and history.

This atmospheric bike route of about 45 kilometers begins in the city of Roosendaal and leads you past quiet chapels, green avenues and villages with a rich heritage. Along the way, you will encounter memories of the war, but also places of rest and reflection.

Start: Roosendaal

You depart from the station of Roosendaal. Before you leave the city, you can already view some war monuments. These monuments remind us of the sacrifices made in the region during World War II.

You leave Roosendaal heading south, where the city quickly transitions into open landscapes.

Oude Buisse Heide

Via rural paths you reach the Oude Buisse Heide, a nature reserve where forest, heath, and cultural history come together. The area was the summer residence of writer Henriette Roland Holst.

Achtmaal

After leaving the forest, you arrive in the village of Achtmaal, a place with an impressive war story. Here stands a museum in memory of the Polish liberators of 1944.

Horendonk and Essen (Belgium)

You now cycle across the border towards Horendonk, and then to Essen, a lively village just beyond the Belgian border.

Nispen

On the way back, you enter the village of Nispen via the main roads, which has a beautiful village center. A visit to the Peace Chapel makes for a fitting conclusion to the route. From Nispen, you cycle back to Roosendaal via the Molenbeek.
