Discover all benefitsThe route starts from Genhout and goes counter-clockwise. 60% of the route is on gravel roads. The route goes through the Plateau of Schimmert and through the Geuldal to the Plateau of Margraten. Then you head southeast towards the Gulpdal and over the Plateau of Crapoel, then via the Geuldal to the Plateau of Vijlen, and then to the Plateau of Bocholtz, Plateau of Ubachsberg to end again through the Plateau of Schimmert. All in all, this means that a lot of climbing and descending must take place, over asphalt and gravel roads.
First, you cycle over the Plateau of Schimmert with many gravel roads, and then you descend over gravel into the Geuldal. Via a gravel bike path, you reach the slopes leading to the Plateau of Margraten, and climb the Bronsdalweg. Then you mostly descend on asphalt towards Bemelen, before cycling for a long time only on gravel roads towards Margraten, which mostly goes uphill (mostly very gradually). You also pass the war cemetery of Margraten. Via Reijmerstok, you descend the Plateau of Margraten into the Gulpdal.
From the hamlet of Pesaken, it’s climbing on gravel roads towards the Plateau of Crapoel, towards Heijenrath. You do not enter Heijenrath itself. Be careful at the turn to the left towards a gravel road, as the asphalt road you leave turns right into an unclear bend! After the gravel road along forest area De Molt, you cycle on asphalt towards Schweiberg, to switch back to asphalt roads around hamlet Bissen and to the village of Schweiberg itself. You then descend to the Geul and climb on asphalt to hamlet Hurpesch on the Plateau of Vijlen. You then descend into the valley of the Mechelderbeek, which you cross over a narrow bridge (the stream itself flows over the gravel road here). And then you continue your way to Wahlwiller. In Wahlwiller, after about 41 km, you come across one of the very few hospitality points directly on this route, namely Gasterij A Gen Kirk.
Wahlwiller lies at the foot of the Kruisberg, which you now also climb, but over gravel. This means that the gradient percentages are between 8 and 10%. After the climb, you stay on the plateau (Plateau of Baneheide, also known as Plateau of Bocholtz) to eventually descend over gravel road to Kasteel Cartils. You then also quickly climb over gravel road to the Eyserbos. The climb is not too steep, until the very last part in the forest itself, where it does become steep.
You climb the Fromberg (first part) on asphalt and descend to hamlet Fromberg, to then climb the Schaapsdries. The descent and subsequent climb (mostly asphalt) takes you to the Plateau of Ubachsberg. Around the village of Klimmen (where you can eat and drink after 57 km at Grandcafé Klumme) the share of gravel roads increases again, and you cross through to the Plateau of Schimmert where you are presented with many more gravel roads, including a descent through the Spaubekerbos (watch out for narrow concrete crossbars during the descent!). From Spaubeek, you climb over gravel road out of the dry valley to end with gravel roads around the northern edge of the Plateau of Schimmert, namely around the Vrouwenbos. At the parking lot by the church of Genhout lies Gasterie Genhout Treft, where you can still eat and drink something.
