This demanding hike of about 30 kilometers starts at the historic station of Simpelveld, once the oldest border station in the Netherlands and now the beating heart of the nostalgic Miljoenenlijn, where steam trains chug through the South Limburg hilly landscape. The route quickly combines religious heritage and rich nature: the Hellingbos with Stations of the Cross, the Lourdes cave, and the monastery church leads you past Huize Loreto and Museum De Schat van Simpelveld, housing top collections of embroidery and religious art. Then the route dives into the border area with neighborhoods like Waalbroek and Horbach, the Dragon's Teeth of the Siegfried Line, and the Eurode region where the Netherlands and Germany are literally connected through facades, squares, and works of art. In Kerkrade, you step right into the mining past: the Domaniale Mine, Shaft Nulland, d’r Joep, and the miners' chapel at Wilhelminaberg tell the story of the 'black gold' and the people who retrieved it. Via Park Gravenrode, GaiaZOO, Roman villa Kaalheide, and the surrounding hillside landscape, you return past Imstenrade, Benzenrade, and Molsberg back to Simpelveld, with tough ascents like the Paardendoder as the final challenge.
