Round trip Grevelingen – 77 km pure Zeeland cycling pleasure
This beautiful road bike route takes you around the Grevelingenmeer, the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe, in about 77 kilometers. With few elevation meters, wide views, and perfect asphalt, this is an ideal ride for lovers of long, smooth kilometers in a unique Zeeland setting.
From the start, you immediately ride into the open landscape of Schouwen-Duiveland. The island is known for its wide dikes, expansive polders, and the ever-present wind – a factor to consider, but also a real character builder. The landscape is open and calming, with long straight stretches that invite a steady pace.
A large part of the route runs along the Grevelingenmeer, which formed after the construction of the Brouwersdam in 1971. What was once an arm of the sea is now a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, birds, and nature lovers. While cycling, you look out over the sparkling water, with sailing boats, diving spots, and small islands in the distance. With a bit of luck, you might spot spoonbills, seals, or large groups of waterfowl.
Along the way, you pass characteristic Zeeland towns like Scharendijke and Brouwershaven. Brouwershaven is a historic town with a rich maritime history and the birthplace of sea hero Jacob Cats. The narrow streets and old harbor give the route a cultural touch.
Characteristic of this ride are the long stretches over the Zeeland dikes. Here you experience the typical rhythm of the region: smooth asphalt, open horizon, and the wind as a constant training partner. The dikes offer beautiful views over both land and water and make this route popular among both recreational and competitive cyclists.
The Grevelingenmeer has saltwater but no tides, which is unique in Europe. The route is relatively flat (about 111 elevation meters), but often feels more challenging due to the wind. Because of the openness, the weather can change rapidly: sun, clouds, and wind alternate. This area is part of the Deltaworks, one of the largest hydraulic engineering projects in the world.
This round trip around the Grevelingenmeer is a perfect combination of nature, history, and sport. Ideal for a long endurance training, a social group ride, or just to enjoy the best that Zeeland has to offer – peace, space, and an endless horizon.
