The route runs through the finely structured, forest-rich area around Winterswijk with its numerous villages (hamlets). It also passes the Winterswijk quarries and the charming town of Bredevoort.

In the nature reserve Bekendelle is the Berenschot watermill from the year 1749. Bekendelle is a small but dense deciduous forest through which the Slingebeek flows. The rare kingfisher breeds on the banks of this stream.

The area around Winterswijk exudes tranquility. The landscape includes the typical Schultenhöfe: stately farmhouses amid large groups of trees. The local Schulten were also responsible for the landscape in the 19th century. Thus, the characteristic park landscape around Winterswijk is also thanks to them.

At other locations, it becomes clear why this area has been declared a particularly valuable Dutch cultural landscape. In the Winterswijk quarries, the oldest strata of the country come to light, and west of Winterswijk lies one of the last raised bogs in the Netherlands, the Korenburgerveen
