Cycle through the Greidhoeke and discover the crafts that have shaped the Frisian landscape and its villages for centuries. Starting in Bolsward, this route takes you past characteristic villages such as Witmarsum and Wommels, where traditional crafts and skilled workmanship are still visible—and can even be visited.

Please note: to visit all the sights, you’ll need to leave the cycling junction network. Download the GPX file for navigation.

Traditional crafts
Along the way, you’ll meet remarkable craftspeople and visit workshops. The route starts in Bolsward, home to Van Buren Schapenvacht Looierij. From there, cycle out of the city to Exmorra. A visit to Glasblazerij Het Quackeltje is well worth your time! At Mevrouw de Molenaar in Witmarsum, artisan bread is made, while in Wommels, Museum It Tsiispakhûs tells the story of Friesland’s traditional dairy culture. A wonderful way to round off the route in Bolsward is with a visit to the Us Heit Frisian Brewery, where you can sample beer brewed in Friesland.

Windmills along the canal
When you think of a craft, you often think of a physical end product, but working as a polder miller is a craft too—one that provides a service. Polder millers played a crucial role in the Greidhoeke, making agriculture, livestock farming and settlement in the area possible. Between Witmarsum and Wommels, you’ll come across beautiful polder windmills along the Harnzer and Boalserter Feart. They are a reminder of the centuries-old use of wind power in the Greidhoeke and the region’s connection with water. The windmills can be visited by appointment and during designated operating hours. For more information, see Discover windmills in the Netherlands.

Plan your visit
Please note that opening hours for craft businesses, museums and windmills may be limited. Check in advance whether a location is open and whether visits are possible; some visits are by appointment only. That way, you can be sure you’ll not only enjoy the scenery along the way, but also get a chance to see Frisian craftsmanship up close.
