A beautiful hiking route around the Nieuwkoopse Plassen.
The municipality of Nieuwkoop developed on drained moorland and is characterized by vast lakes, extensive polders, and beautiful nature reserves.
The Nieuwkoopse Plassen were created starting in the 16th century through peat extraction in the region. Peat was mined on a large scale to be used as fuel. In addition to the lakes, the area around Nieuwkoop has many reed fields, which particularly give the eastern part of the area a wide and open character.
Besides the Nieuwkoopse Plassen and the scattered village of Nieuwkoop, the Langeraarse Plassen and the picturesque Meije river are also nearby.
