Painted Kampen route

Kampen has a rich tradition in the field of painting and has produced painters of supraregional and even international fame. Of the 17th century Kamper painters, Hendrick Avercamp ('The Mute of Campen') and his cousin Barent Avercamp are best known. Both mainly painted ice faces, of which 'De Kamper vroedschap op het ijs' by Barent Avercamp has become very well known. This painting from 1663 can be seen in the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. The Males and Toe Boecop families (16th century) also made a name for themselves. Remarkable was the appearance of a female painter in the 16th century (Mechtelt Toe Boecoop), which was unique to the northern Netherlands at that time. Especially in the second half of the 19th century there was a flourishing artistic life in Kampen. A real city drawing school and artists' associations of contemporary painters at the time demonstrate this. Artists such as Tholen, Roosenboom and Voerman are by far the most famous, but the city artists such as Belmer and Hein have also left their mark. For the 19th century and partly 20th century there are names that of Hondius, Boele, Kruishoop, Van Dam van Isselt and Jo Koster, born in Kampen, who painted many still lifes and faces of Staphorst in her life.
