Around Valkenburg

A route adapted from 1987, but still almost accurate.
After almost 30 years, this route is still recommended. Here is the current route description.

Route description around Valkenburg 10 km.
You start from Valkenburg train station. LA = Left Turn, RA = Right Turn, RD = Go straight ahead.

With your back to the beautiful station building, turn left into Stationsstraße. At the intersection with Nieuweweg, turn right. At the traffic lights, turn left into Reinaldstraße. Take the third street on the right at the traffic light, Sint Pieterstraat. You are now on the route on the route map.

Choose the second street RA Gosewijnstraat. At the T-junction with Grotestraat LA and at the intersection just past the Geul, turn RA Pelerinstraat. Take the first street LA Kerkstraat, keeping left while turning. At the next curve with Muntstraat, turn LA. Muntstraat becomes Berkelstraat. Go immediately past Hotel De La Ruïne RA up the stairs from Meijlandstraat along the castle of Valkenburg. Go back down and turn left into Daalhemerweg.

Stay on the left side of Daalhemerweg.
Just after the curve, you will see a staircase to Den Driesch on the left, go up the hill and stay left. Go out of Den Driesch, the asphalt becomes a dirt hollow way. Follow the path and turn RA at the paved road. Continue RD at the fork with Koksweg Heunsbergweg. This asphalt farm lane continues until the built-up area of Sibbe.

Just before the fork in Sibbe with Torenweg and Hemelrijkstraat, you will see a footpath on the right between house numbers 19 and 21. Turn RA into this footpath and walk until Dorpstraat. Turn RA and take the first street LA Gatsestraat. At the T-junction with Sibbekerkstraat, you will see a typical Limburg farm, turn LA.

After about 250 m in Sibbekerkstraat directly in front of the church, you will find the Café aan de Kirk on the left; http://cafeaandekirk.nl/home/fietsen,
a lovely rest area for a break. You are about halfway.

The second part of the walk is mostly unpaved; hopefully, you are wearing good hiking shoes as it can be a bit muddy here and there, especially after rainy periods.

Continue along Sibberkerkstraat until Pasveldweg at the end of the built-up area. Turn LA into Pasveldweg. Pasveldweg becomes Groenstraat and increasingly unpaved. At the fork, keep right and at the T-junction, turn LA Gorisweg, an unpaved field path. The country road forks, keep left at Kalkensweg, a grass path leading to Sint-Jansbos. At the fork in the woods, keep right and continue along Kalkensweg. Descend and you will come to a fork with a field path, turn left and follow the field path, Kapelkensweg until the fork at Sint Jansboskapel. Turn RA.

Cross the traffic road RD over Chaloersvoetpad. Through a beautiful avenue of trees, you walk towards Castle Schaloen, now a chic hotel. Right over the bridge over Geul, continue RA on the footpath and turn LA with the curve to another bridge over Geul. You stand in front of the Calvariengruppe Die Drei Bildchen.

Turn right and go diagonally left uphill at the fork. You will come out along the railway line. Continue until the unguarded crossing. Turn LA over the tracks and stay left. The path bends to the right and at the fork, you go up the stairs. Climb all the way to the top until you come out at Kluis on Schaelsberg with the Stations of the Cross. Continue to Waldstraße Schalons Molenweg, turning RA.

At the intersection with the field path, turn LA into Molenvoetpad. You leave the woods and after the field with a wide view on the right, you come back into woods. You descend and reach an asphalt road, Euveren. Turn LA into the tunnel under the tracks to Oosterweg and turn RA.

Follow Oosterweg to the end and keep right at the fork, you continue on Oosterweg. Here the marked route on the route map ends.

Now take the first street RA Hekerbeekstraat. Just before the train tunnel, turn left into a cycle/walkway. The path becomes an asphalt road and you arrive at the busy intersection with Nieuweweg. Cross the road and go to the train station where this route description began. And the walk ends.
