Fifth stage of the reconstruction of the route along which Hugo Grotius fled from Loevestein to Antwerp on 22 and 23 March 1621. Hiking version.
The first part of this stage deviates from the original escape route, which followed the current Hoogstratensebaan. This road is so unpleasant to walk on (no free walking path and disturbing car traffic) that an attractive detour has been made to near Baarlebrug. An alternative route has also been set out for cyclists who want to avoid the crowds.

NA. I consider the route that has now been set out to be a very acceptable compromise between walking pleasure and historicity. Undoubtedly, the very beautiful surroundings offer hiking trails that have even more to offer in terms of natural beauty. Cor Hermans from Meerle proposes such a alternative for: over the Torendreef south to Wortel and from there continue towards Hoogstraten. Indeed a beautiful walking trail. However, this variant does not do enough justice to the history, which is simply leading in 'Historical Routes'. Hermans' route is particularly missing from the Baarle bridge at Zigrak, where Hugo De Groot crossed the Merkske.
