Voorschoten, with its strategic location between Leiden and The Hague, formed an attractive site. In the 17th and 18th centuries, more than twenty country estates were established there by wealthy townspeople. Now only six remain. The walking path passes five of them, which lie as green oases of tranquility between the residential areas.
