City tour Meppel (from Wevershoek to Everdoek)

Meppel is a charming city where its rich trading history is still visible. Transport used to take place via water, and Meppel played an important role in this with its many canals. Some canals have been preserved, as well as the cozy historic old town with the Meppel Tower and the old warehouses.
Start your walk at Kerkplein, where the 600-year-old Grote or Mariakerk is located. Following the signs, you will reach the main street, the most important shopping street in Meppel. Stop here briefly and look up at the old facades. Further along in Touwstraat and Woldstraat was a Jewish quarter before World War II. Various monuments and plaques tell the (tragic) story of this Jewish community.
You will also come to Keizersgracht, which was called Wevershoek due to the large number of weavers. At the height of this industry, there were 700 looms there, and Meppel was particularly known for the Everdoeks: a lightweight canvas that was used among other things for the ships of the VOC. At Stoombootkade, you will find one of the best-preserved pieces of Meppel's navigable past. From here, boats departed to places like Amsterdam. The goods taken back were stored in the many warehouses.
That Meppel was traditionally also a printing city with many printing houses can be seen at the printing museum, which is housed in 3 old warehouses. Back at Kerkplein, it is nice to linger on the terrace of one of the many gastronomic establishments that Meppel has to offer.
The route begins at Kerkplein. You cannot park here, but it is possible to do so nearby for a fee. In the city center of Meppel, there is a limited parking regulation on the street. However, you can park for a long time in the parking lots. The parking guidance system will lead you to the desired parking spot. The walking route can also be picked up at other locations based on the signage.
