The MTB route between Gieten and Borger lies on the Drentser Hondsrug. The Hondsrug is an ancient natural elevation that formed around the Ice Age. Originally, the area was heathland, but nowadays most of the region is forested.
Many will recognize the forests and sand pits from the Hondsrug Classic and the international cyclocross competitions.
"This mountain biking trail along the ’t Nije Hemelriek is incredibly varied. It is technical, featuring many elevation changes, beautiful curves, and singletracks. Various surfaces alternate. Black sand with tree stumps, followed by loose sand at the sand pit. This trail requires various techniques and makes it very challenging."
