This route takes you through the catchment area of the former river Hunze. You will hike through one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Western Europe: an open pasture landscape that is largely a protected nature reserve. Along the way, you will pass sights such as the octagonal polder mill Koningslaagte (1887), the early medieval Wolddijk, the centuries-old cemetery of Wierum, and of course the Reitdiep. Until 1876, when the Eems Canal was constructed, it was the only open waterway from Groningen to the sea.
