This hike, through what was once the expanded mouth of the River Fivel, takes you along the five Wierden villages of Middelstum, Toornwerd, Kantens, Huizinge, and Westerwijtwerd. You start in Middelstum, which was the main town of the namesake municipality until 1990. Once a village with famous manors like Ewsum, Mentheda, and Asinga. From the latter, you can still find a part of the moat and the gatehouse. In Kantens, there is a brick church with a baptismal font made of Bentheim sandstone from the 13th century. Also, make a brief stop at the place Melkema in Huizinge; in the 14th century, it was a moated farmstead. Finally, the village walk leads you to Westerwijtwerd with its brick church from the mid-13th century.
