As the name suggests, this historic hiking trail (partially) runs exactly along the border between the provinces of Friesland and Groningen. This border was officially established in 1724, using boundary stone No. 14 as a reference point. This boundary stone was located in the middle of the former defense line; the fortification of Frieschepalen. The walk takes you past three of the originally 25 cast-iron boundary stones, featuring the coats of arms of both provinces, which were erected in 1874 between the Reitdiep and Bakkeveen.
