On the Veluwe in Otterlo

Appointment at Carnegie Cottage (V), Onderlangs 35, in Otterlo. Cross the road and walk into the forest path to the left of the information board. Turn right and on the next T turn left, now on a 'grassy' forest path. Ignore side paths and follow this path until after a kilometer it turns left and ends up on a wide forest road. Turn right and cross the hill via a hollow road. On the other side, keep walking straight ahead, without caring about side paths, until you step past a blue pole. On the left is the juniper forest, on the right a heathland. About 30 m before a fence, at the next blue pole, take the forest path on the right. You pass Huize Jekel with thatched roof and horse stables and end up on a T. Right. Walk out of the forest and take the sandy path through the heath on the left. After the heath you come to a sandy plain. Continue straight until just past the second red marker. Turn left and along the sand hill to the forest1 edge. Go into the forest, cross a cycle path and cross the Arnhem road via two folding gates. Then ignore the path on the left along the fence and take the first forest path on the left. At the fork, choose left again. Follow the winding path until you reach the edge of a sandy plain after a bend. Straight ahead, along the edge of the forest to the fence, and further along the wire fence to a folding gate. Step through and keep left at the fork, to the Mosselse pad, a paved cycle path. Shortening: sharp right turn + GR path to a first folding gate. For the full tour, follow the asphalt path to the left until you reach the Mosselse weg. Follow this wide dirt road with cycle path to the left, through the heath. When the moorland ends on your right, take the first forest path on the right. At the junction with the bridle path (after 20 m) keep right and follow the edge of the heath. Turn right with the path and continue walking along the heath. Don't care about side paths and make a U-turn to the left with the path. At a folding gate you follow the wide dirt road with cycle path to the right. After 500 m you step along the watchtower of the Valenberg. On the first quadruple, turn right. You come to the Koeweg and follow it to the right. Step over a cattle - grid and immediately turn right. Ignore two forest paths on the left and keep left at the Y-junction. Don't worry about side paths until a bike path comes from the right on your way. Follow the path straight ahead and step into the bend through the folding gate. This is where the shortening comes in. Walk straight ahead and follow the GR signs until you reach a folding gate opposite Camping De Wije Werelt. Through the gate and turn right until the Arnhem road. On the other side you step into the Vijverlaan. At the fork, choose on the right. Then take the first forest path on the left and let yourself be guided by the red posts. You walk between two ridges. After a left turn you climb over the ridge and then right. Let yourself be guided by the red posts. You cross a dirt road with a rest bench on the left and stand in front of a sandy plain. Turn just past 3 2 dendijks called the Molenstraat. On the other side of the Scheldt you can see the mouth of the Durme. Continue until junction 23 and leave the Scheldedijk. Walk towards junction 24 and enter Weert. You step past Iene miene mutte, a shop of rattan, reed and bamboo, and regional museum De Zilverreiger, where you can also go for tourist information about the region. There is also no shortage of catering establishments in Weert. At junction 24, turn right. You walk past the church of Weert, direction Branst. On the left is the Oude Schelde. Past the statue of the girl feeding the chickens (with picnic area) take the field road on the right, direction 46. Before a house, turn left and then right. You walk along a meadow and cross a narrow bridge. Continue walking until you reach a narrow asphalt road, with junction 46. Turn left, direction 47. At the fork, at the end of Briel, turn right. You climb along a beautiful pond (a wheel) to junction 47 on the Scheldedijk. Follow the Scheldt upstream, direction 48. After this junction, continue straight along the Scheldeschorren until you reach junction 49. Turn right along the salt marshes until you reach the Scheldt and continue to follow the river upstream, towards 35. You walk along the village center of Branst and restaurant Scheldehooft and a little further along café Koningsrek. In this café, Nand Buyl stood behind the counter in the series Stille Waters. 'Stretch' refers to a long, straight channel. Here is the longest rack, upstream of Antwerp, the king's rack. The café was named after it, but is also known as Bij Zates. On the dike there is a chapel in a boat. At junction 35, continue straight until you reach the church of Mariekerke. 2 the second red post turn left.
