The Zak van Zuid-Beveland is an area on the former island of Zuid-Beveland in Zeeland. It is a small-scale landscape characterized by small polders and countless inner dikes with valuable natural and landscape elements such as welen (or wheels), border ribbons, creeks, vliedbergen and small villages.
Welen or wheels are gullies, created by earlier dike breaches. These gullies were so deep (10 meters) that the dike could no longer be repaired and had to be placed around the gully hole.
The area was created by numerous small reclamations, which were started in the twelfth century by the monks of Sint Bavo from Ghent.
A number of times the route comes outside the dike, which often means pedaling a lot (with a headwind) or cycling in a bad boat (with a tailwind).
