On foot from Antwerp to Veenendaal
Route 11: Asperen - Geldermalsen station

The Gilbert van Schoonbekepad follows the banks of the Linge during this part of the route. The river meanders strongly on this stretch. After Fort Asperen it will be nice and quiet along the path again. Take a look at the leaning tower of the church in Acquoy. Yes, it's really crooked! After Rhenoy we follow another wide bend of the Linge and Rumpt is reached. The square with the church and the monumental presbytery is another place to stop and think. In the town of Beesd, the route deliberately goes over the entire Voorstraat, a 'stone street' since the Middle Ages. The lime trees and the many historic buildings complete the protected village view. Via the beautiful Notenlaan we enter the Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt a little later. This estate stems from an abbey founded in the 12th century and known for its abundance of agricultural products. In 2019, the extensive Estate Shop still displays an extensive range of delicacies. The route leads you directly in front of the beautiful country house, which is built on the vaults of the original abbey. Even when the fruit trees are not in bloom, it is pleasant to walk on the famous Appeldijk. There are always beautiful views over the Linge. At the village of Tricht (the inhabitants speak of 'Trig') we leave the river briefly to enter Geldermalsen. This route ends at the station, at the beginning of the village.

Fastest connection by public transport between start and end point: From Geldermalsen station, take the local train to the right. Dordrecht. Get off at Leerdam station. From there by bus 141 dir. Heukelum or Local bus 260 dir. Geldermalsen and get off in Asperen, stop Raadhuisplein. (Bus 141 does not run on Sat-Sun and Local bus 260 is on Sunday Dial-a-bus 260)
