On foot from Antwerp to Veenendaal
Leg 15: Grebbesluis Rhenen - Veenendaal

You start the last stage of the Gilbert van Schoonbekepad at the beginning of the Grebbedijk at the Grebbesluis. If you feel like it, you can also first visit the Blue Room nature reserve. Once on the road, you will soon arrive at the bank of the Bishop Davidsgrift. In the 15th and 16th centuries, many peat on this grift left the Gelderse Vallei on special barges. After about 8km enjoying reeds, water, flowers and birds you will arrive at the edge of Veenendaal. Nature reserve de Hel is a unique piece of remnant of peat extraction in the past. Experience what the raised bog used to look like! We enter the built-up area of Veenendaal (how could it be otherwise) over the Gilbert van Schoonbekestraat. The route takes the opportunity to lead you in Veenendaal along tracks from Gilbert's time. But also along the other traces of the Veens past. The original natural hills, the Grote- and the Kleine Veenlo, where the first habitation of the peatland took place, are still recognizably present. After you have taken a look at the Schoonebeeksche Grift, your steps focus on the center of the city, where our route ends at the Markt near the Oude Kerk.

Fastest connection by public transport between start and end point: From the Markt in Veenendaal on foot to Veenendaal Centrum train station (800m). By train to Rhenen station. On foot to bus stop Station/Tuinlaan (100m). By bus 44, 45 or 50 (dir. Wageningen) and get off at the Grebbesluis stop.
