Blackwater Cities Route

The landscape around the Black Water Cities, the 'Olde Maten', is a reflection of human influences on the natural environment. Here you will find varied floodplain landscapes along the dikes of the Zwartewater.
This cycle route takes you past Genemuiden, which is known as a place where reeds and rushes are still processed. The development of this can be seen in the Carpet Museum. The history of Hasselt goes back to the Hanseatic era when the city was a transshipment point for, for example, cloth, wood and hides. Zwartsluis is all about water sports, it is called 'the gateway to the North'.
