Cycling route Island of Dordrecht

This cycle route (30 km) leads through the historic city center of Dordrecht, the quiet polders in the outskirts and the Biesbosch.

City and Biesbosch polders

Dordrecht has a historic city centre full of monuments. The medieval street pattern and the characteristic ports have hardly changed. Before you dive into the green polder area, you first cycle through the city center. Disembark at the Nieuwe Haven for a visit to the Huis van Gijn, a surprising and homely museum!

Pilot whales and creeks

After the St. Elisabeth flood of 1421, Dordrecht was left as an island in a large inland sea. Original polders had been flooded or turned into a swampy area. Over the centuries, pieces fell dry or were reclaimed. Along the rivers and on the southern tip of the island, pilot whales and rugged areas arose.

Picnic in the Alder Forest

These pilot whales belong to the National Park De Biesbosch. There is also a polder forest, the Elzenbos. Along the route you can walk, picnic or swim in natural water. Take a walk on the nature trail along the Nieuwe Merwede, learn more about the cultural history of the island in Museum Twintighoeven and enjoy the river view on a terrace at the Kop van 't Land.
