Train journey Oosthuizen - Edam

The carrying route from Oosthuizen to Edam is a test of endurance: you follow a proud 10 kilometers of the coastline of the IJsselmeer. Outside the village of Oosthuizen, we cross the railway line and shortly before Warder, we enter the meadows. We follow the winding edge of the ditch toward the mill De Breek, which is visible from afar.

Along the way, two cable ferries provide additional entertainment. The Etersheimerbraak is truly a special place. Here, not only has the raised bog been drained, but also the interior pond that was created after a dam break. Take a look at how deep the bog behind the mill is: - 3.8 m above sea level. We walk around the deep bog to the village of Etersheim, where the teacher C.J. Kieviet was inspired by the stories of Dik Trom.

On the former Zuiderzee dyke, we first take a detour through the outer marshes De Oosterkoog, today a magnificent nature reserve popular with greylag geese, alpine sandpipers, and lapwings. Then the grass dyke leads to Edam. You will be surprised by the many details on the water, in the polder De Zeevang and near the dyke. Along the way, we pass some shell beaches with common terns and shore crabs, a warm reminder of the Zuiderzee. Not much needs to be said about the final part to Edam, simply beautiful.
