Discover all benefitsMany Dutch people who head south to go cycling in South Limburg, ride to Valkenburg or even further into South Limburg. However, just below Geleen, you can also start and link together many climbs in the northern part of South Limburg. Not well-known climbs, but enough to gain significant altitude. The route goes around the plateau of Schimmert and around the plateau of Doenrade. The beauty of this latter plateau is that there are many roads that are closed to motor traffic (except for agricultural traffic). Note that on these roads closed to motor traffic, there may sometimes be tractor gates.
You follow the track counterclockwise and start in Genhout, near Spaubeek. It is easily accessible via the A76 ( exit Spaubeek). However, when driving home, there is no exit Spaubeek towards the west. You must then drive to Neerbeek to take the exit to the A76 from there.
The first 9 km from Genhout is warm cycling. You first ride to Elsloo to descend over the cobblestones into the Maas valley (descent Maasberg). Once down, you cycle past Castle Elsloo. Near Geulle, you first encounter the Slingerberg, then you descend Snijdersberg and subsequently climb the Schieversberg.
You then cycle towards Bunde and Schietecoven and descend the Biesenberg with a completely renewed road surface in 2020 and a beautiful view of the hilly landscape before you. Then follows the climb of Wijngaardsberg through the hamlet of Waterval. You cycle on the plateau to Schimmert and then go to the hidden hamlets of Helle and Terstraten and climb out of the hamlet of Terstraten. Via the descent of the Hegge, with a view of the chemical complex at Geleen, you go to Schinnen. There, you go under the A76 highway and cycle through the valley of the Geleenbeek. At the height of Castle Terborgh, you climb the (for cars prohibited) Slakweg to the Plateau of Doenrade. On and around this plateau, you will find (as mentioned earlier) many roads closed to motor traffic (except for agricultural traffic). Thus, you still get the climbs around this plateau including the Boompjesweg (max. 12%), the Horbies, the Hillensberg (just over the border in Germany, with a steeper section behind the church) and the Eekerweg. Finally, you descend the plateau definitively via the steep Stammenderbos, to return to Genhout via Spaubeek and the climb of the Hobbelrade (which is on the plateau of Schimmert).
Note that on some hollow roads and on roads passing through fields, sand may wash out during rainy periods, making these roads muddy (or just dusty after a rainy period is followed by a dry period).
