Description by the author

Last update July 4, 2020: the route has been slightly adjusted in Doenrade and Jabeek.

Many Dutch people heading south to cycle in South Limburg drive to Valkenburg or even further into South Limburg. However, just south of Geleen you can also start and link many climbs in the northern part of South Limburg. No famous climbs, but enough to gain a lot of elevation. The route goes around the plateau of Schimmert and around the plateau of Doenrade. The beauty of this last plateau is that there are many roads that are closed to motor traffic (except for agricultural traffic); sometimes there are tractor gates at the beginning/end of such a road. Some climbs to the plateau of Doenrade are narrow sunken roads (sometimes bordered by trees): after rainy periods, sand can wash onto the road here, and branches may lie on the road that have been torn off after gusts of wind. Therefore, in this route, almost all narrow sunken roads bordered by trees are taken in an ascending direction, except for the descent from the Stammenderbos and the descent to Etzenrade. It is therefore advisable to follow this route in the indicated direction (otherwise you will have to descend on some narrow, fairly steep sunken roads bordered by trees).

You follow the track counterclockwise and start in Genhout, near Spaubeek. It is easily accessible via the A76 (exit Spaubeek). However, when driving home, there is no Spaubeek entrance heading west. You will need to drive to Neerbeek to take the entrance to the A76 there.

The first 9 km from Genhout is warm cycling. You first cycle to Elsloo to descend over the cobblestones to the Maas valley (descent Maasberg). Once down, you cycle past castle Elsloo. Near Geulle, you first encounter the Slingerberg, then you descend the Snijdersberg and subsequently climb the Schieversberg.

Then you cycle towards Bunde and Schietecoven and descend the Biesenberg with a completely renewed road surface in 2020 and a beautiful view of the hilly landscape ahead of you. Next is the climb of Wijngaardsberg via the hamlet of Waterval. You cycle on the plateau to Schimmert and then go to the hidden hamlets of Helle and Terstraten and climb out of the hamlet of Terstraten. Via the descent of the Hegge, with a view of the chemical complex near Geleen, you head to Schinnen. There you go under the A76 highway, and soon you cycle out of the valley of the Geleenbeek via the steep Zandberg to the plateau of Doenrade. On and around this plateau, you will find (as previously mentioned) many roads closed to motor traffic (except for agricultural traffic). Thus, you get many more climbs around this plateau with a maximum height difference of 30 meters, namely those of the Kleverberg, the Boompjesweg (max. 12%), the Horbies, the Hagendoornweg, the Wilmenweg, the Oude Misweg.

You cycle briefly into Germany and climb the more serious Hillensberg (with a steeper section behind the church), the Wanenberg, and the Eekerweg. After the descent of the Stokselweg, you then follow the beautiful climb called Duistergatsken. Finally, you descend definitively from the plateau via the steep Stammenderbos, to arrive back in Genhout via Spaubeek and the climb of Hobbelrade (which lies on the plateau of Schimmert).
