Adventurous walk through the ENCI quarry, over the Sint Pietersberg and past Marl caves

Adventurous walk right through the ENCI quarry, over the top of the Sint Pietersberg, past the ruins of Caestert, past the Ternaaien-beneden cave complex with a view of the lost valley, via the Devil's Cave and many beautiful viewpoints!

This fantastic walk starts from the large parking lot at Fort Sint Pieter (alternative: Rue L'Illal in Petit-Lanaye). After a kilometer and a half we approach the ENCI quarry with a great view. After enjoying the view we descend via the iron stairs to the ENCI site.

The hiking trail through the quarry is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 12 to September 1. From September 1 to April 1, the quarry is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Unfortunately, due to the height differences, the quarry is not accessible for the disabled.

The holes of the marl quarries are clearly visible. After more than a kilometer we walk out of the area past a catering establishment and we start the climb of the Sint Pietersberg. Just after the 4km point we climb further to the top of the Sint Pietersberg or we turn right to cut off the top. From this point it is 1km round trip to the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain are several picnic benches.

After the descent of the Sint Pietersberg we enter Belgium and a little later we see on the left the old gatehouse and the remains of what was once Castle Caestert.

A few hundred meters further, just before the 6km point we turn left and immediately afterwards we see two remnants of what was once a gate on the right. A few dozen meters further to the left of the large wide path is the entrance to the Ternaaien-boven cave hidden. We descend further through a historic gate with a beautiful view over the Meuse.

Previously, this walk went through the lost valley. Unfortunately, this is no longer accessible. We therefore descend further to climb again a little later. We walk in a wide arc around the lost valley. At the 6.6km point we turn right to a nice picnic spot just before the entrance of the Ternaaien-beneden cave complex. Here is also a view over a part of the lost valley where, among other things, the rare tongue fern can be found.

The walk continues past a second semi-closed entrance to the Ternaaien-beneden cave. We also see a well that is actually a kind of chimney and also has a connection to the cave.

In the meantime, the paths have widened again and we walk through a meadow with beautiful flowers in the summer. Enjoying all that beauty we pass some information signs and some picnic possibilities. At the 10km point you will see many photographers photographing flowers and butterflies in the summer. A true paradise! Immediately after this follows the Devil's Cave. After the devil's cave we walk through the west side of the ENCI area through a varied landscape slowly back to the parking lot. Finally, a small detour around Fort Sint Pieter.
