The route starts in Markelo, moving clockwise. First, the route heads towards the Sallandse Heuvelrug, a beautiful forest/heath area located on a ridge (also a National Park). Before reaching the Sallandse Heuvelrug, you will climb the Zuurberg (Kwintenweg), a small bump. Then follows the most challenging hilly section of this ride over and around the Sallandse Heuvelrug with the following climbs:

Holterberg-Zuid (narrow paved bike path along the unpaved Beukenlaan),
the Motieweg or Holterberg-West (up to 10%),
Grote Koningsbelt,
Hellendoornse Berg Zuid (once again, a narrow paved bike path along a dirt road, and also a descent over such a bike path),
Hellendoornse Berg Oost.
Then the route leaves the Sallandse Heuvelrug to go over the Luttenberg and returns to the Sallandse Heuvelrug for the climb of the Eelerberg.
The tourist road on the tops of this Sallandse Heuvelrug (Holterberg - Grote Koningsbelt - Noetselerberg) attracts a lot of traffic on weekends and holidays, including many cyclists.

The route goes through the valley of the Midden Regge and passes through and along the edge of the town of Nijverdal. After that, you travel over paved bike paths along sandy roads back towards the top of the Holterberg (and descend eastward over these bike paths). The bike paths can be especially busy with recreational cyclists on sunny weekends and holidays around the Holterberg, so this route is not suitable for large groups of racing cyclists.

The route continues towards Rijssen and the area around Markelo. Here you will find small, isolated hills with elevation differences of 20 to 40 meters, but the road has slightly less elevation change. So here are little climbs that you can do on the big ring to challenge your legs. Typical of the Markelo area are also the cobblestone roads. These hills combined with the small-scale hedgerow landscape and the beautiful Saxon farms create a lovely and very picturesque landscape. Which of these hills will you encounter after the Sallandse Heuvelrug on the route? They are, in succession:

Koerbelt,
Rijssenseberg,
Apenberg,
Friezenberg,
Herikerberg-Noord,
Herikerberg from Goor,
Kattenberg,
and finally the Markelose Berg (the most beautiful of all).
