Description by the author

For centuries, the Hurkske was a heathland with an important function for agriculture. By grazing with sheep and weeding the heath, valuable manure was extracted for the surrounding arable land. The introduction of fertilizer, around 1870, made the moors superfluous. The better soil was then used as agricultural land and the bad parts were planted with forest between 1900 and 1928. Today it is a 180 hectare area with fens, drifting dunes, heathland, coniferous forest, deciduous forest but also low and wet land. The area offers good living conditions for various plant species, frogs, toads, lizards, birds, mammals and a great wealth of mushrooms. Every season there is plenty to see and discover!

The walk starts from a "hidden" parking lot behind coffee and tea house "De Boswachter", the start and end point of this very varied walk.
