Description by the author

The route starts in Rothem at the church and you follow it counterclockwise. The route goes over the western part of the Margraten plateau and its edges. The longer climbs go over the edge of the plateau, but there are also some short climbs on the plateau, usually brief and sometimes steep (Örenberg) and occasionally a bit longer (Banholtergrubbe).

First, you will encounter climbs at the edge of the plateau, cycling upwards to the plateau and back down to the Maas valley. The climbs are (in order):

Kuitenbergweg
Heerderweg (with 200 meters of well-paved gravel road surface at the top)
Sint-Joseph
Moerslag
Altenbroek (a beautiful climb from Belgium to the Netherlands from the Voerdal with a moderate road surface but great to cycle uphill)

After that, you stay on the plateau where you mainly have shorter climbs for your wheels:

Noorbeekerweg
Molenweg Banholt
Heerkuil
Banholtergrubbe
Örenberg
Bundersberg
Groot-Welsdenerweg

The route then descends to Valkenburg and finally you get the overrated Cauberg, the last real climb to the plateau, now from the Geuldal. After descending into the Geuldal via the Brakkeberg, you cycle for some time through the Geuldal. The Oliemolenweg is the last (very short) climb before you reach the endpoint again in Rothem.

On the route, you will encounter slightly more cycle paths along through routes than usual for my routes, namely a bit near Rothem, the descent from the Rasberg, near Berg and Terblijt (2x), between Eijsden and Sint-Geertruid, between Sint-Geertruid and Mheer, and along the Cauberg. Additionally, there are also some separate cycle paths in the route: in the Maas valley east of Amby and Rijckholt, and between Mesch and 's Graven-voeren.

And of course, you need to consider the wind on the plateau, which has free rein here. But you are rewarded with many vistas.
